The Twilight Samurai (2002) (subtitles)

I admit I am a fan of the classics. My love of movies began with Star Wars; on that day, I had watched it 5 times. I am also a big fan of Akira Kurosawa's Samurai movies. A lot of great samurai films have already been released, so the question is, did the samurai theme become saturated ages ago? Not unless you count 2002 as such.

The Twilight Samurai was recommended to me by participants of a Kendo forum. The story is centered on low end samurai Seibei Iguchi. He is a younger than middle-aged widower with two young children and a senile mother. Every night, when the other Samurai go off to drink and be merry in the evening, Seibei goes home to take care of his family. Thus he earns the monniker "Twilight Samurai".

This film doesn't have so many action scenes, but the story more than makes up for our need to see a lot of fighting, and the fighting scenes are of very good quality. The love story evokes a wide range of emotions, as does the general theme of the decline of the samurai (a theme which Kurosawa has utilized in most of his samurai films). Twilight Samurai is a young classic that will stand the test of time, and I'm pleased to be the first to introduce it to this forum. Four katanas!
